Located in the southeast quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Ogden is a residential neighbourhood with a rich history and a vibrant community. The neighbourhood includes the districts of Lynnwood and Millican Estates, and it is bounded by Glenmore Trail to the south, Deerfoot Trail and the Bow River to the west, and the CPR tracks and industrial areas of Ogden Shops to the north and east.
History
Established in 1912, Ogden has a storied past, with its name derived from I.G. Ogden, a former VP of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The district of Millican, on the other hand, is named after the Millican family, who were homesteaders in the early 1900s. Represented in the Calgary City Council by the Ward 9 councillor, Ogden continues to be a vital part of Calgary’s community fabric.
Demographics
According to the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Ogden was home to 8,702 residents living in 3,879 dwellings, reflecting a 3.2% increase from its 2011 population of 8,432. Spread over a land area of 4.1 km² (1.6 sq mi), Ogden had a population density of 2,122/km² (5,500/sq mi) in 2012. The community reported a median household income of $47,500 in 2000, with 18.1% of its residents living below the low-income threshold. About 14.6% of Ogden’s residents were immigrants, 19.9% of its buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 33.3% of the housing was used for renting.
Economics
In a significant development for the area, CP Rail announced in December 2012 its decision to relocate its corporate head offices to Ogden. This move involves the construction of new corporate offices within the century-old Ogden rail yard, marking a major investment in the community’s future.
