Chaparral stands out as a picturesque residential community in the southeast quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. Established in 1995, it is well-known for its 32-acre artificial lake, a 21-acre park with stunning waterfalls, and its strategic location at the southern edge of the city. This neighborhood is under the governance of Mayor Jyoti Gondek, represented in the Calgary City Council by Councillor Peter Demong.
Location and Layout
Chaparral is positioned south of Stoney Trail, bordered by the Bow River Valley to the east, 194 Avenue SE to the south, and Macleod Trail to the west. This location provides residents with easy access to major roadways and natural scenery. The community comprises three unofficial sub-sections: Lake Chaparral, Chaparral Valley, and Chaparral Ridge, each offering unique living experiences.

With an elevation of 1,040 meters (3,410 feet), Chaparral offers breathtaking views and a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. The artificial lake and park are central to the community’s lifestyle, providing a tranquil escape and space for various activities. In 2011, the neighborhood boasted a population of 11,151, which saw an increase in the following years, reflecting its growing appeal.

Chaparral has experienced steady population growth, with a notable increase of 3.6% from 2011 to 2012. By 2019, the population had reached 12,654, living in 4,179 dwellings. The community maintains a population density of 2,139 per square kilometer (5,540/sq mi). The median household income stood at $79,761 in 2000, with 4.4% of residents living with low income. The neighborhood is diverse, with 14.7% of its residents being immigrants as of 2000. In terms of housing, a small percentage of buildings are condominiums or apartments (5.2%), and only 2.4% of the housing is used for renting.
