Location

Spanning a compact 0.6 km² (0.2 sq mi) with an elevation of 1,060 m (3,480 ft), Parkdale offers residents stunning views and a close connection to nature. The neighborhood is bordered by the Bow River to the south, 28 St NW to the east, Shaganappi Trail NW to the west, and 16th Avenue to the north.

History

Annexed to the City of Calgary in 1910 during a major economic boom, Parkdale’s development was temporarily halted due to World War I. The 1950s post-World War II era saw the rise of bungalow-style housing, characteristic of the community. By 2014, a gentrification wave began transforming the neighborhood, with modern, spacious homes inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural style becoming increasingly prevalent.

Demographics and Lifestyle

The 2012 municipal census reported a population of 2,962, residing in 1,020 dwellings—a slight decrease from 2,317 in 2011. The area has a population density of 2,090/km² (5,410/sq mi), highlighting its close-knit community feel.

Parkdale is home to a diverse age demographic, with 26% of residents aged 65 and older, contrasting with Calgary’s overall 10%. The neighborhood also boasts a significant number of residents over the age of 85, totaling 305 individuals. With 75% of its population younger than 64, Parkdale maintains a vibrant and youthful atmosphere.
