Ramsay is a vibrant residential neighborhood situated in the southeast quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. Covering an area of 0.9 km² (0.3 sq mi) and at an elevation of 1,065 m (3,494 ft), Ramsay combines inner-city living with a rich historical background.
Location
Strategically located east of the Elbow River, Macleod Trail, Stampede Grounds, and the Scotiabank Saddledome arena, and south of Inglewood, Ramsay provides easy access to Calgary’s core and a variety of recreational activities. The southeastern border of Ramsay is adjacent to the Alyth-Bonny Brook industrial area, and the community’s eastern half predominantly features older homes.
History
Developed in the 1880s by Wesley Fletcher Orr and partners, the area gained its name in 1956 when the communities of Burnsland, Brewery Flats, Grandview, and Mills Estate merged, honoring William Thomson Ramsay (1857-1921), an influential land agent and property owner. Today, the community is represented in the Calgary City Council by the Ward 9 councillor.
Future Developments
In 2020, the Calgary City Council gave the green light for the construction of the Inglewood/Ramsay Station as part of the Calgary Green Line. This elevated station, located near 11 Avenue SE and 12 Street SE, is set to begin construction in early 2021.
Demographics
As of the 2012 municipal census, Ramsay’s population stood at 2,110, showing a 5.2% increase from 2011. The community houses 1,132 dwellings and boasts a population density of 2,100/km² (5,500/sq mi).
The median household income in Ramsay is $43,716, with 19.5% of residents living below the poverty line. As of 2000, 15.1% of the population were immigrants, and 31% of the buildings were condos or apartments. Additionally, 46.9% of the housing is used for renting.
