Location and Boundaries

The neighborhood is strategically situeted, bounded by the Trans-Canada Highway to the south, the Bow River to the north, Stoney Trail to the west, and the community of Bowness to the east. The renowned Canada Olympic Park is also located just to the south of Greenwood/Greenbriar, providing an array of recreational opportunities. Positioned at an elevation of 1,120 m (3,670 ft), Greenwood/Greenbriar covers an area of 1.2 km² (0.46 sq mi). This space allows for a comfortable living environment, with room for both residential and commercial development.

History and Community Development

Established in 1911, Greenwood/Greenbriar has evolved significantly over the years. The area primarily consists of a mobile home park, Greenwood Village. However, since the early 1980s, proposed developments have been in the works. By 2019, the Greenwich community began development, introducing semi-detached homes, commercial businesses, and restaurants to the area.

Demographics

According to the City of Calgary’s 2016 municipal census, the community housed 905 residents living in 485 dwellings, though this represented a 4.3% decrease from its population in 2012. The neighborhood’s population density stood at 750/km² (1,950/sq mi).

The median household income for Greenwood/Greenbriar residents was $54,638 in 2016, with 15% of the population living below the low-income threshold. The immigrant population comprised 8% of the residents, contributing to the area’s cultural diversity. Housing in the community is varied, with all buildings being either single-family detached homes or mobile homes, and 15% of the housing units were rented.
