Upper Mount Royal is a distinguished area in Calgary, Alberta, known for its affluence and historic significance. It comprises two distinct sections: Upper Mount Royal, the southern part known for its luxury estates, and Lower Mount Royal, the northern section on flatter terrain.
Geographical Coordinates
Mount Royal is located at coordinates 51°01′57″N 114°05′01″W. With an elevation of approximately 1,080 meters (3,540 feet), it stands in the southwest quadrant of Calgary. Mount Royal is bound to the north by 17th Avenue SW and to the west by 14th Street SW. An escarpment separates Upper from Lower Mount Royal, providing a natural distinction between the two communities.
Historical Significance and Demographics
Established in 1904, Mount Royal was once referred to as ‘American Hill’ due to its original residents, the American business elite. As of 2001, a significant percentage of residents (29.2%) were American immigrants. The name later evolved to the more patriotically Canadian Mount Royal.
Upper Mount Royal is particularly known for its opulent homes, some nearing a century old, while Lower Mount Royal is denser and more urban.
As per the 2012 municipal census, Lower Mount Royal had a population of 3,180, showing a notable increase from the previous year, while Upper Mount Royal had a slight increase to a population of 2,542.
