Highland Park is a residential neighborhood located in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. Established in 1946, it has grown to be a vibrant community with a variety of amenities and services.
Location and Boundaries
Highland Park is strategically situated and bordered by McKnight Boulevard to the north, Edmonton Trail to the east, 32 Avenue N to the south, and 4 Street W to the west. The neighborhood is close to popular green spaces like Confederation Park and Nose Hill Park. Additionally, the Queens Park Cemetery and Highland golf course are prominent features within the area.
History and Development
The land on which Highland Park stands was annexed to the City of Calgary in 1910, setting the stage for its establishment in 1946. Today, it is represented in the Calgary City Council by the councillor of Ward 4.
Demographics
As of the 2012 municipal census, Highland Park had a population of 3,792 residing in 2,123 dwellings, marking a 7.1% increase from 2011. The neighborhood spans an area of 1.4 km² (0.54 sq mi), resulting in a population density of 2,710/km² (7,020/sq mi). The median household income stood at $37,766 in 2000, with 23.9% of residents living below the low-income threshold. About 13.7% of the populace were immigrants, while a significant portion of the buildings (48.7%) were condominiums or apartments, and 64% of the housing was rented.
Queens Park Village
Queens Park Village, a small community within Highland Park, borders the Queens Park Cemetery. It experienced a population growth of 3.8% from 2011 to 2012, housing 415 people in 188 dwellings. Its population density was 690/km² (1,790/sq mi), and the median household income was $53,040 in 2000. Notably, 20.3% of its residents were classified as low income, and all of its housing was rented, predominantly in condominiums or apartments.
Education
Highland Park benefits from various educational institutions serving its community. Buchanan Elementary School caters to students from kindergarten to 6th grade, enrolling 169 pupils as of 2023. Georges P. Vanier Junior High School serves grades 6 to 9, with an enrollment of 474 students in 2023. Lastly, James Fowler High School provides education for students in grades 10 to 12, with a student body of 1332 as of 2023.
