Location and Government
Beddington Heights is geographically positioned within Calgary’s Ward 4 and is governed by the Calgary City Council. Mayor Jyoti Gondek and Councillor Sean Chu are key representatives for the area. The neighbourhood is demarcated by Berkshire Boulevard to the north, Beddington Trail to the east, Beddington Boulevard to the south, and 14th Street W to the west.
Demographics
According to the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Beddington Heights experienced a slight population increase of 1.1% from its 2011 numbers, with a total of 11,585 residents. The community stretches over an area of 3.2 km², bringing the population density to 3,620/km² as of 2012. The median household income was $56,881 in 2000, and 14.4% of the residents were considered low income. The area is culturally rich, with immigrants making up 27.5% of the population as of 2000.
History
The community takes its name from the village of Beddington in Surrey, England. Originally serving as a Canadian Pacific Railway station, the formal establishment of Beddington Heights as a residential area occurred in 1979.
Education
As of 2020, Beddington Heights is served by two educational institutions:
- Beddington Heights Elementary School, managed by the Calgary Board of Education.
- St. Bede Elementary School, part of the Calgary Catholic School District.
Shopping and Commercial Areas
Centre Street serves as the commercial heart of Beddington Heights, featuring prominent retail chains like Calgary Co-op and Safeway. The Beddington Towne Centre and its adjacent area are filled with bars, restaurants, small stores, and banks. Moreover, a London Drugs store can be found in the neighbourhood. Bedford Drive, near Nose Creek Park, also has a small strip mall housing multiple take-out restaurants and a liquor store.
