Mission is a well-established inner-city neighbourhood located in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. With its roots dating back to the late 19th century, this community has a rich history and has evolved into a vibrant and diverse area. The neighbourhood is positioned at coordinates 51°01′55″N 114°04′12″W, and it is known for its bustling 4th Street SW, which is lined with a variety of restaurants and shops.

History

Originally founded as Notre Dame de la Paix, a Catholic mission, Mission later became the Village of Rouleauville before being annexed by Calgary in 1907. The area was established by Oblate missionaries, with Father Constantine Scollen founding the permanent location in 1875. Despite efforts to maintain a strong French-speaking Catholic community, the area gradually lost its French character and adopted an English-speaking identity.

Community

Today, Mission is represented in the Calgary City Council by Ward 8 Councillor Courtney Walcott. The community has a population of 4,433 as of the 2006 census, and it spans an area of 0.53 km² (0.20 sq mi). The neighbourhood has an average income of $37,040 and a high population density of 8,364.2/km² (21,663/sq mi).

Mission is known for hosting the Lilac Festival in June, an event that draws visitors and locals alike to celebrate the start of the spring season. The area is also recognized for its accessibility, with numerous shops, restaurants, and amenities within walking distance.

Educational Institutions and Religious Heritage

The community is home to St. Mary’s School, the oldest school still operating in Calgary, initially established in a log cabin convent in the Mission district in 1885. Additionally, St. Mary’s Church, founded in 1889, became St. Mary’s Cathedral in 1912, serving as the seat of the newly formed Diocese of Calgary.
