Roxboro is a small, affluent residential neighbourhood located in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Known for its picturesque setting by the Elbow River and its historic homes, Roxboro offers residents a unique blend of natural beauty and urban convenience.
Location
The neighbourhood is strategically situated, bounded to the north and west by the Elbow River, and to the south by 33 Avenue SW. It coordinates at 51°01′35″N latitude and 114°04′16″W longitude, with an area of 1.0 km² (0.4 sq mi) and an elevation of 1,055 m (3,461 ft).
Demographics
As per the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Roxboro had a population of 421 residing in 161 dwellings, marking a -4.5% decrease from its 2011 population of 441. The population density stood at 1,400/km² (3,600/sq mi). In terms of income, Roxboro stands out as one of Calgary’s wealthiest neighbourhoods, with residents having a median household income of $153,667 in 2000. Remarkably, there were no low income residents reported in the neighbourhood. All buildings in the community were single-family detached homes, and none of the housing was used for renting.
History Development
Roxboro was established as a community in 1923, with its neighbouring community Rideau Park established earlier in 1911. Buildings from these periods still stand today, adding a historic charm to the neighbourhood. Both communities were designated as official communities of Calgary in 1967.
