Calgary’s Chinatown is a vibrant and culturally rich district located in the southeast area of Downtown Calgary. Renowned for its Asian-influenced architecture, shopping centers, and diverse culinary offerings, it serves as a focal point for the Chinese community and visitors alike.

Geographic Location

Positioned along Centre Street and immediately west of the Downtown East Village, Chinatown is in close proximity to major city attractions. Its central location makes it an accessible and popular destination.

Architectural and Cultural Highlights

  • Chinese Cultural Centre: Modeled after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, it stands as North America’s largest facility of its kind, offering a glimpse into traditional Chinese architecture and cultural practices.
  • Dragon City Mall: A shopping hub that provides a variety of Asian products and services.
  • Sien Lok Park: A public park located within the district, offering green space and recreational areas.

The district also has an area extending along Centre Street north of downtown, referred to as the city’s second Chinatown, which is heavily influenced by Asian culture. International Avenue in the city’s southeast is another notable multi-ethnic center with a significant Asian presence.

Demographics

As per the 2006 census, Chinatown had a population of 1,361 residents, with an average income of $16,174, the lowest in the city. The 2012 municipal census recorded an increase in population to 1,577, living in 1,381 dwellings, marking a 24.3% increase from 2011. The population density in 2012 was 7,900/km² (20,000/sq mi), spread over an area of 0.2 km² (0.077 sq mi).

The community has a high percentage of low-income residents, with 57% classified as such. Additionally, as of 2000, 92.1% of the residents were immigrants. The housing landscape is dominated by condominiums and apartments, making up 98.6% of the buildings, with 86% of the housing used for renting.

Area Redevelopment

In 2005, an area redevelopment plan was initiated to revitalize and enhance the district, ensuring that Calgary’s Chinatown continues to be a vibrant and integral part of the city’s cultural and social fabric.
