Geographic Location
The community can be found at coordinates 50°53′52″N 114°04′52″W, bordered by Stoney Trail to the south, Bridlewood to the west, and Macleod Trail to the east. Somerset’s proximity to these major roadways ensures easy access to various parts of Calgary. The renowned Spruce Meadows equestrian facility is also located just southwest of the community, adding to the area’s appeal.
Demographics
As of the City of Calgary’s 2016 municipal census, Somerset housed a population of 8,596, residing in 3,153 dwellings. Covering a land area of 2.3 km² (0.89 sq mi), the neighbourhood boasted a population density of 3,710/km² (9,620/sq mi). The community has a relatively affluent demographic, with a median household income of $88,150 as of 2000, and 6.6% of residents living with low income. Additionally, 23.1% of Somerset’s residents were immigrants, and the community had a diverse housing mix with 10.8% condominiums or apartments, and 4.8% of homes available for rent.
Education
Somerset is well-served educationally, with the Somerset School (K-4) and Samuel W. Shaw School (5-9) catering to younger students, both operated by the Calgary Board of Education. The Calgary Catholic School District’s Bishop O’Byrne High School is also easily accessible for high school students living in Somerset.
