Nestled in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Patterson Heights stands as a residential neighbourhood enriched with history and panoramic views. Bordered by prominent roads and natural parks, the community offers a serene living environment with convenient access to urban amenities.

Location and Boundaries

Patterson Heights is strategically located, bounded by Sarcee Trail to the east and north, Bow Trail to the south, 69 Street to the west, and Old Banff Coach Road to the south. The neighbourhood enjoys close proximity to Edworthy Park, situated in the Bow River valley to the north and east across Sarcee Trail. Situated at an elevation of 1,205 m (3,953 ft), Patterson Heights offers stunning views of the surrounding areas, enhancing the living experience for its residents.

Origins and Development

Before becoming the residential neighbourhood it is today, Patterson Heights was predominantly characterized by acreages. The area is named after the Patterson family, major landowners in the region. It was initially known as Broadcast Hill, attributed to the presence of a 250 m (820 ft) CFCN re-transmission tower.

Despite initial plans for the University of Alberta to be established in Patterson Heights, the campus was eventually set up in Edmonton. The area was annexed to Calgary in 1956, and by 1983, Patterson Heights was officially established as a neighbourhood.

During the XV Olympic Winter Games in 1988, the community hosted the Broadcast Hill Media Village, with its apartments later converted to condominiums.

Population and Housing

As per the 2012 municipal census, Patterson Heights had a population of 4,281 residing in 2,008 dwellings, reflecting a 2.9% increase from the 2011 population. The neighbourhood covers a land area of 2 km² (0.77 sq mi), resulting in a population density of 2,100/km² (5,500/sq mi).
