Forest Lawn is a vibrant neighborhood located in the southeast quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with a rich history and a diverse community. Originally a separate town, it was annexed by Calgary on December 30, 1961. Today, Forest Lawn is known for its multicultural 17 Avenue SE and is part of the International Avenue Business Revitalization Zone.

Geographic Location

The neighborhood of Forest Lawn is bounded by 26 Avenue SE to the south, 36 Street SE to the west, 8 Avenue SE to the north, and portions of 52 Street SE and 48 Street SE to the east. The area encompasses the entire current Forest Lawn neighborhood, as well as portions of Southview, Albert Park/Radisson Heights, Penbrooke Meadows, and Forest Lawn Industrial.

Governance and Representation

Forest Lawn is part of Ward 9 in the Calgary City Council and is currently represented by Councillor Andre Chabot. On the federal level, the neighborhood falls under the electoral district of Calgary Forest Lawn and is represented in the House of Commons by MP Jasraj Hallan.

History

Forest Lawn has a storied past, dating back to the early 1900s when it was first settled. It was originally part of the Municipal District of Shepard No. 220. On July 4, 1934, Forest Lawn and nearby Albert Park incorporated as villages, and just over a year later, they amalgamated under the name of the Village of Forest Lawn. By December 29, 1952, Forest Lawn had gained town status. Although it pursued city status in 1958, the application was never completed. The town was eventually annexed by the City of Calgary.

Demographics and Community

As of the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Forest Lawn had a population of 7,487 living in 3,352 dwellings, showing a 2.4% increase from its 2011 population. The median household income was $40,396 in 2000, with 27.5% of residents living below the poverty line. About 18.6% of the residents were immigrants, and a significant portion of the housing was used for renting.
