Pembroke is a city in eastern Ontario located along the Ottawa River near the border with Quebec. The city developed historically through forestry, lumber trade and river transportation during the nineteenth century.
Its location along the Ottawa River allowed timber harvested from surrounding forests to be transported downstream to markets in Ottawa and Montréal. Over time Pembroke expanded with residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and regional services.
Today the city serves as a regional centre for communities across the Ottawa Valley while maintaining a strong connection to its forestry heritage.
