Rouyn-Noranda is a city in western Quebec located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region near the border with Ontario. The city was created through the amalgamation of the neighbouring communities of Rouyn and Noranda, both of which developed around mining activities during the early twentieth century.
The discovery of copper and other minerals attracted workers and companies to the region, leading to rapid growth. Mining remains an important part of the local economy, alongside forestry and regional services.
Today Rouyn-Noranda functions as a cultural and administrative centre for the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, supporting surrounding communities across western Quebec.
