Saint John is a historic port city located in the province of New Brunswick along the Bay of Fundy. Founded in 1785, it is one of the oldest incorporated cities in Canada and has played an important role in maritime trade and shipbuilding for more than two centuries.
The city developed around a natural harbour along the Saint John River, which flows into the Bay of Fundy through a narrow passage known as the Reversing Falls. These unusual tidal phenomena occur when powerful ocean tides reverse the flow of the river, creating dramatic changes in water movement.
Today Saint John remains an important industrial and port city with oil refineries, shipping facilities and manufacturing industries. Its historic downtown architecture and waterfront also attract visitors interested in maritime history and coastal landscapes.
