Thompson is a city in northern Manitoba located along the Burntwood River. It was established in the late 1950s following the discovery of major nickel deposits in the surrounding area. Mining quickly became the dominant industry and shaped the development of the community.

The city was originally designed as a planned community to support mining operations. Residential districts, public buildings and infrastructure were constructed to serve workers and their families. The surrounding boreal forest and numerous lakes define the natural landscape of the region.

Today Thompson continues to serve as an important mining and service centre in northern Manitoba while also providing regional healthcare, education and transportation services for nearby communities.
