Thunder Bay is a major city in northwestern Ontario located on the northern shore of Lake Superior. The city was formed through the amalgamation of the former cities of Port Arthur and Fort William.
Its location on the Great Lakes made Thunder Bay an important transportation and shipping centre for grain and natural resources moving between western Canada and international markets. The port remains one of the largest grain handling facilities on the Great Lakes.
Today Thunder Bay serves as the largest urban centre in northwestern Ontario, providing healthcare, education and regional services for a vast surrounding area.
