Whitehorse is the capital city of Yukon and the largest community in Canada’s northern territories. The city is located along the Yukon River and serves as the political, economic and transportation centre for the territory.
The settlement developed during the Klondike Gold Rush at the end of the nineteenth century when the region became an important route for prospectors travelling toward goldfields further north. Later transportation infrastructure, including highways and aviation, strengthened Whitehorse’s regional importance.
Today Whitehorse functions as the administrative capital of Yukon while also supporting tourism, government services and northern transportation networks.
