Geographic Location
With coordinates at 50°54′28″N 113°59′14″W, McKenzie Lake spans a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 sq mi). It is bounded by Deerfoot Trail to the east, Stoney Trail to the south, Fish Creek Provincial Park to the west, and 130th Ave SE to the north.
History and Development
McKenzie Lake has undergone extensive development since the mid-1980s. The initial community of McKenzie was established in 1984, south of Stonegate. Following the annexation of the town of Midnapore into Calgary, interest in the deep south of the city surged, leading to the development of McKenzie Lake. The creation of an artificial lake in the area, inspired by amenities in other communities like Lake Bonavista, added to the appeal of McKenzie Lake. The community expanded once more in 1997 with the development of Legacy Ridge, connecting McKenzie and McKenzie Lake.
Demographics
As of the 2012 municipal census, McKenzie Lake had a population of 14,050, residing in 4,653 dwellings, reflecting a slight decrease of 0.1% from the 2011 population of 14,062. The population density stood at 2,755/km² (7,140/sq mi).
Residents enjoy a median household income of $97,291 as of 2000, with 7.8% of the population living with low income. Immigrants constitute 14.2% of the residents. The housing landscape is dominated by single-family detached homes, with 6.3% of the housing available for rent.
Education
The community is well-served educationally with two public schools: McKenzie Lake Elementary School (K-4) and Mountain Park Middle School (5-9); as well as one separate school, Cardinal Newman School (K-9).
