The Calgary Metropolitan Region (CMR), also known as the Calgary Region, represents the vibrant heart of Alberta, centering around Calgary, the province’s largest city. Established by the Government of Alberta in 2017, the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) was formed to guide the development and cooperation of the municipalities within this thriving area.
Spanning a diverse array of communities, the CMR includes the City of Calgary, Foothills County, Rocky View County, and a portion of Wheatland County, creating a tapestry of urban and rural living. Cities such as Airdrie and Chestermere add to the urban vibrancy, while seven towns, including Cochrane, High River, and Okotoks, offer charming alternatives to city life. The inclusion of two villages and two First Nations communities further enriches the cultural fabric of the region.
Despite its extensive reach, not all communities within the CMR’s boundaries are administrative members of the CMRB, showcasing the unique and varied nature of this region.
When comparing the Calgary census metropolitan area (CMA) as defined by Statistics Canada, it is notably smaller than the CMR. The Calgary CMA encompasses Calgary, parts of Rocky View County, and several smaller municipalities, reflecting a more urban-centric perspective.
Serving as a major transportation hub, the Calgary Metropolitan Region connects southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, eastern British Columbia, and parts of the northern United States. The Calgary International Airport, situated within this nexus, stands as the fourth busiest airport in Canada, highlighting the region’s importance in national and international travel.
Despite its growth and development, the Calgary CMA requires an update to reflect the evolving nature of this dynamic region. The 2011 Census recorded a population of 1,214,839, with a population density of 237.9 people per square kilometre, showcasing significant growth and establishing the Calgary CMA as the largest in Alberta and the fourth largest in Canada.
Encompassing approximately 40% of Statistics Canada’s Division No. 6 in Alberta, the Calgary CMA reflects the broader appeal of the Calgary Metropolitan Region. With its mix of urban energy and rural charm, supported by strong transportation links and a diverse community, the Calgary Metropolitan Region stands as a testament to the vibrant, thriving nature of southern Alberta.
