Location and Government

Situated east of the Glenmore Reservoir and the Elbow River, Bel-Aire is bordered to the west by the communities of Meadowlark Park and the Chinook Centre, and to the north by the neighbourhood of Mayfair. The community falls under Ward 11 in the Calgary City Council, with Councillor Kourtney Branagan as the current representative. The administrative body is the Calgary City Council, led by Mayor Jyoti Gondek.

Demographics

According to the 2012 municipal census, Bel-Aire had a population of 424, residing in 159 individual dwellings. This represented a 5.6% decrease from its population in 2011. The neighbourhood is relatively small, with a total area of just 0.3 km², resulting in a population density of 1,410/km² as of 2012. A notable characteristic of the community is its high median household income of $138,124, recorded in 2000. There were no low-income residents, and 13.5% of the populace were immigrants. Housing in Bel-Aire is exclusively composed of single-family detached homes, and none are used for renting.

History

Bel-Aire was annexed to Calgary in 1954 and formally established as a neighbourhood in 1960. The Calgary Country Club golf course serves as its northern boundary, adding an additional layer of exclusivity and luxury to the area.

Education

Bel-Aire is home to a specialized educational institution, the Calgary Girls’ Charter School, which serves students in grades 4 and 5 on its Bel-Aire campus.
