Lake Bonavista stands as a testament to innovative urban development, being the first community in Canada to be built around a man-made lake. Developed by Keith Construction starting in 1967, the neighbourhood has since flourished into a vibrant and sought-after area to live.
Geographically, Lake Bonavista is bounded by Anderson Road to the north, Macleod Trail to the west, Canyon Meadows Drive to the south, and Bow Bottom Trail to the east. Within its expanse, it also houses the smaller community of Bonavista Downs in the northeast corner.
The neighbourhood’s history is rich, with its development serving as a prototype for other lake communities within Calgary. It has undergone significant changes over the years, including the relocation of two trailer courts from the west side to make way for new developments. Today, the area features shopping complexes, car dealerships, apartments, a retirement home, and an office building, alongside the Avenida shopping centre which opened in 1988 to cater to the growing community.
Demographically, Lake Bonavista is home to a diverse population. As per the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, the community had a population of 10,475 living in 4,106 dwellings, marking a slight decrease from the previous year. The median household income stands at an impressive $101,025, although the community still sees a presence of low-income residents.
The amenities in Lake Bonavista are extensive, with the Lake Bonavista Promenade offering retail and professional office spaces. Shopping areas along Macleod Trail and the Southcentre Mall are easily accessible, and the proximity to Fish Creek Park provides ample outdoor recreation opportunities.
Community life is enriched by the Lake Bonavista Community Association, which manages a community centre complete with ice rinks, a gym, and multipurpose rooms. Additionally, the Frank McCool Arena offers another venue for ice-related activities.
Man-made lakes are central to the neighbourhood’s appeal. Lake Bonavista, a 52-acre man-made lake, provides year-round recreational opportunities, from fishing and swimming in the summer to skating and tobogganing in the winter. The residents also have access to Lake Bonaventure, though this is exclusive to the houses directly surrounding it.
Education is well catered for, with several public and Catholic schools serving the community. Lake Bonavista also enjoys robust transport links, with Calgary Transit providing extensive bus services and the nearby Canyon Meadows CTrain Station offering convenient access to the wider city.
