Richmond is a city in British Columbia located south of Vancouver on Lulu Island within the Fraser River delta. The city forms part of the Metro Vancouver region and is known for its multicultural population, international connections and proximity to Vancouver International Airport.
Much of Richmond’s land lies at sea level within the Fraser River delta, requiring an extensive system of dikes to protect against flooding. Historically the region developed through fishing and agriculture, particularly in areas close to the river and coastal waters.
Today Richmond is an important centre for international trade, aviation and commerce. The city also includes vibrant commercial districts, residential neighbourhoods and waterfront parks along the Fraser River.
