Rimouski is a coastal city in eastern Quebec located along the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River. It serves as one of the principal urban centres of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region and has long played an important role in maritime activities and regional administration.

The city developed historically as a port and transportation hub linking communities along the Saint Lawrence corridor. Fishing, shipping and marine research have all contributed to the local economy. Rimouski is also home to several research institutions focused on oceanography and marine science.

Today the city combines educational institutions, cultural activities and maritime industries while serving as a gateway to the Gaspé Peninsula and surrounding coastal landscapes.
