Sudbury, officially known as Greater Sudbury, is a major city in northern Ontario built around one of the world’s largest nickel mining regions. The city was created through the amalgamation of several communities across a large geographic area.
Mining has shaped the history and economy of Sudbury for more than a century. The Sudbury Basin, formed by an ancient meteorite impact, contains rich deposits of nickel, copper and other minerals.
Today Sudbury is an important centre for mining technology, research and education while also serving as the largest urban hub in northern Ontario.
