Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia and is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island along the Pacific Ocean. Known for its mild climate, historic architecture and coastal scenery, Victoria has long been one of the most distinctive and livable cities in Canada.

The city was established in the mid-nineteenth century as a trading post for the Hudson’s Bay Company and later developed as a colonial capital during the early years of British settlement in the Pacific Northwest. Many historic buildings remain from this period, including the British Columbia Parliament Buildings and the Fairmont Empress Hotel overlooking the Inner Harbour.

Victoria is also a major centre for tourism, education and government administration. The University of Victoria and numerous cultural institutions contribute to a vibrant academic and cultural environment. Today the city combines historic charm, scenic coastal landscapes and a strong public sector economy as the capital of British Columbia.
