North Bay is a city in northeastern Ontario located along the northeastern shore of Lake Nipissing. Often referred to as the “Gateway to the North,” the city historically served as an important transportation and railway hub connecting southern Ontario with the northern parts of the province. Its strategic position along major rail and highway routes contributed significantly to the development of the region during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The city’s economy has traditionally been influenced by transportation, forestry and regional services. In addition to these industries, North Bay has developed strong educational and healthcare sectors that serve surrounding northern communities. Nipissing University and Canadore College are located in the city and contribute to a growing academic and research environment.

Natural landscapes play an important role in the character of North Bay. Lake Nipissing and the surrounding forests offer opportunities for boating, fishing and outdoor recreation throughout the year. Today the city continues to function as an important regional centre for northeastern Ontario.
