Peterborough is a city in Ontario located along the Otonabee River northeast of Toronto. The city developed during the nineteenth century as an industrial centre supported by water power and transportation routes.

Peterborough is home to the famous Peterborough Lift Lock, one of the largest hydraulic boat lifts in the world and part of the Trent–Severn Waterway. This historic engineering structure remains a major landmark and tourist attraction.

Today the city is known for its cultural institutions, educational facilities and scenic river landscapes that attract residents and visitors throughout the year.
