St. Catharines is a major city in Ontario located in the Niagara Region along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Often referred to as “The Garden City,” St. Catharines is known for its extensive parks, gardens and tree-lined streets.
The city developed as an industrial and transportation centre connected to the Welland Canal, which allows ships to bypass Niagara Falls while travelling between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The canal continues to play a major role in regional shipping and infrastructure.
Today St. Catharines also functions as a cultural and educational centre within the Niagara Region. Brock University and several cultural institutions contribute to the city’s academic and artistic environment.
