Oakridge is a vibrant residential neighbourhood nestled in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. It is bounded by 90 Avenue S to the north, 24 Street W to the east, and Southland Drive to the west and south, sharing a border with the Glenmore Reservoir and the Weaselhead Natural Area to the north. Established in 1968 and annexed to the City of Calgary in 1956, Oakridge is a community that combines natural beauty with convenient city living.

History

Before becoming part of Calgary, Oakridge was under the jurisdiction of the Municipal District of Rocky View. Its annexation to the City of Calgary in 1956 marked the beginning of a new chapter, and by 1968, it was officially established as a neighbourhood. Construction of homes and businesses began in earnest in 1969, contributing to the community’s growth and development.

Demographics

According to the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Oakridge was home to 5,651 residents living in 2,291 dwellings, reflecting a slight decrease in population from the previous year. The neighbourhood spans an area of 2.4 km² (0.93 sq mi), resulting in a population density of 2,350/km² (6,100/sq mi).The community boasts a median household income of $72,674 as of 2000, with 6.9% of residents living below the low-income threshold. Immigrants constituted 21.3% of the population, while condominiums and apartments made up 1.8% of the housing, and 8.4% of homes were rentals.

Education

Oakridge is served by the Louis Riel Elementary & Junior High public school, which offers both a Science Program and the GATE Program, catering to the diverse educational needs of the community’s children.
