Gatineau is a major city in the province of Quebec located directly across the Ottawa River from Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. Together the two cities form the core of the National Capital Region.
The city was created through the amalgamation of several municipalities and now includes a wide range of neighbourhoods and urban districts. Government institutions, cultural facilities and residential communities are distributed across the area.
Gatineau Park, a large protected natural area located north of the city, provides extensive opportunities for hiking, cycling and winter sports. The city’s proximity to Ottawa also means many residents work within federal government institutions.
