Port Alberni is a city located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia at the head of the Alberni Inlet. The city developed historically as a forestry and industrial centre, with logging and pulp production forming the foundation of the local economy for much of the twentieth century.
The sheltered inlet allowed the development of shipping and industrial facilities that supported the forestry sector. Over time the city expanded with residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and public services that support surrounding communities across central Vancouver Island.
Today Port Alberni continues to maintain a strong connection to forestry while also developing tourism and outdoor recreation. Nearby mountains, rivers and coastal waters attract visitors interested in fishing, hiking and exploring the natural landscapes of Vancouver Island.
