Yellowknife is the capital city of the Northwest Territories and the largest community in northern Canada outside the provincial capitals. The city is located along the northern shore of Great Slave Lake and serves as the political, economic and administrative centre of the territory.
The settlement developed during the 1930s after the discovery of gold in the surrounding area. Mining activity led to the establishment of permanent infrastructure and helped shape the early development of the community.
Today Yellowknife functions as the main hub for government, transportation and services across the Northwest Territories. The city is also known as one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights due to its northern location and clear skies.
