Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is a city in Quebec located along the Richelieu River approximately forty kilometres southeast of Montréal. The city is an important regional centre within the Montérégie region and has long served as a transportation and commercial hub connecting communities along the Richelieu River corridor.
The city’s history dates back to the eighteenth century when fortifications and military posts were established along the river to protect the colony of New France. Fort Saint-Jean, which remains an important historic site, played a strategic role in colonial conflicts and later military development in Canada.
Modern Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu includes residential neighbourhoods, industrial districts and commercial areas that support the local economy. The Richelieu River continues to shape the city’s identity through waterfront parks, recreational boating and public spaces along the shoreline. The city is also known for hosting one of Canada’s largest hot air balloon festivals each summer.
