Sydney is a community located on Cape Breton Island in the province of Nova Scotia. It forms part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and has historically served as the economic and cultural centre of the island. Positioned along the eastern coast of Cape Breton, Sydney developed around a natural harbour that supported shipping, trade and industrial development for more than a century.

The city grew significantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when coal mining and steel production became dominant industries in the region. Industrial plants and port facilities transformed Sydney into one of Canada’s most important steel-producing centres. Workers from across Atlantic Canada and Europe moved to the area during this period, contributing to the region’s cultural diversity.

Although heavy industry declined during the late twentieth century, Sydney remains an important administrative, commercial and cultural hub on Cape Breton Island. The waterfront area now features parks, cultural venues and public spaces that highlight the city’s maritime character. Today Sydney continues to support tourism, government services and regional commerce across Cape Breton.
